What They Don't Teach You About Leadership
When Max and I started Youth Investment Institute, we had a vision but no playbook. No MBA. No corporate experience. Just a burning conviction that young people deserved better financial education.
Two years later, we've served hundreds of members, built partnerships with organizations like ALUX, and created a platform that's changing lives. Here's what I learned along the way.
Lesson 1: Vision Without Execution Is Hallucination
Everyone has ideas. The difference between dreamers and builders is the willingness to do the unglamorous work. For every inspiring speech I give, there are 100 hours of spreadsheets, emails, and problem-solving.
Takeaway: Fall in love with the process, not just the vision.
Lesson 2: You Don't Need Permission
We didn't wait for someone to validate our idea. We didn't apply to an accelerator first. We didn't raise money before starting. We just... started. Built the website. Created the curriculum. Reached out to potential members.
Takeaway: The best time to start is before you feel ready.
Lesson 3: Your Team Is Everything
I can't build Y2I alone. The mentors, advisors, volunteers, and members who believe in this mission are the organization. My job is to serve them, not the other way around.
Takeaway: Leadership is service. Hire people smarter than you and get out of their way.
Lesson 4: Rejection Is Redirection
For every sponsor who said yes, ten said no. For every partnership that worked, five didn't. For every member who thrived, some dropped off. Each rejection taught us something and made the eventual yes more meaningful.
Takeaway: Rejection is data, not destiny.
Lesson 5: Transparency Builds Trust
We share our financials. We share our challenges. We share our mistakes. This radical transparency has built more trust than any marketing campaign ever could.
Takeaway: People follow leaders they trust. Trust requires vulnerability.
Lesson 6: Impact Over Metrics
It's easy to chase vanity metrics — followers, downloads, page views. But one member who transforms their financial life is worth more than 10,000 passive followers.
Takeaway: Measure what matters. For us, that's lives changed.
Lesson 7: Take Care of Yourself
I burned out in year one. Tried to do everything, be everywhere, respond to everyone. I learned that a depleted leader serves no one. Now I protect my energy fiercely.
Takeaway: You can't pour from an empty cup. Rest is productive.
What's Next
Y2I is just getting started. We're building toward a future where every young person in America has access to world-class financial education, regardless of zip code, background, or income.
That's not a dream. It's a plan. And we're executing it every single day.
If you want to lead, start by serving. The rest follows.
